Netherfield Colts Orange 1 Hucknall Sports U10's 3 a.e.t
Sunday 7th November 2004
High flying Sports were made to scrap every inch of the
way for this hard fought but much deserved victory, as a resolute Netherfield
Colts didn’t make it easy for Sports to progress into the last sixteen of the
Notts FA Shield.
With the teams facing each other the previous week in the
league, Colts did their homework and for the whole of the first half did
everything to spoil Sports’ flowing football with plenty of physical play and
shirt pulling and it was not until the last minute of the half that the deadlock
was broken when Alex Smith managed to escape the grips of his two minders to
plunder an important opener. Skipper Matt Yates with fellow defender Will
Hillary looked calm and collected at the back and with Sports not taking their
chances in the second period despite the introduction of Keiran Clarke who
really took the game by the scruff of the neck, Colts got an equalizer with
literally the last kick of the game as the normally solid Sports defence failed
to clear a harmless looking ball into the area.
With five minutes each way of extra time on the cards, Sports went out determined not to have to contend with the lottery of penalties. Joshua Newcombe duly obliged with a trademark poachers goal seconds into the first five and with Sports flooding forward wave after wave the outcome of the tie was put beyond doubt when Joshua Henrys made it 3-1 midway through the second five, finishing clinically from ten yards. The highlight of the match had to be the performance of man of the match Matt Yates who showed flashes of his old ‘nippy winger’ days from back in the under 8’s when making numerous mazy runs forward from defence.
