HUCKNALL SPORTS STAY TOP!

Lowdham Colts who hosted this game, delivered a spirited opposition and turned on a good display of football.  If they had settled sooner, and not been so nervous to begin with, their opening goal might have been in the visitor’s net instead of their own, just 10 minutes into the game.

Hucknall were able to contribute to their own score line five minutes later when Ross Lamb sailed a curling shot into the top right corner of the Lowdham net from 20 yards out.  However, the determined Lowdham side pressured the visitor’s goal forcing the second home goal error of the match on 27 minutes.  Lowdham’s luck continued with a converted penalty decision to bring the match back on an even keel on the half hour.

This was the wake-up call that Hucknall were looking for, who then seemed to be able to focus on the game for the first time and give a display more fitting to their dominating league position.  Taking the game to Lowdham from the restart they pressured the home defence.  From a Ross Lamb corner a Jan Westrik header was cleared out as far as Shaun Holmes who volleyed from the edge of the 18 yard box, to score just before half time.

Sports seized an early opportunity in the second half when a Vijay Digpal cross connected with the inbound Danny Jones who spectacularly tucked it past the outstretched home keeper for his 9th goal of the season.  Colts put up commendable resistance for the majority of the second half, but the game was put beyond their reach when the unmarked head of Hucknall’s Shaun Holmes connected sweetly with a Ross Lamb free kick just after the hour.  A flurry of Hucknall goals polished off the match, with Lamb and Holmes completing Hat Trick performances, together with fine efforts from Digpal and Harry Beal to end the game at 2-10 to Sports, with the Man-of-the-Match honours going to Shaun Holmes.
