The first match of the New Year sees Sports narrowly beaten by a hard working and talented Vernon side. 

Sports were the slower side getting started in this match but once they did wake up the first half  we saw some excellent football from both sides. Both teams had chances to go in front but were denied by some superb goal keeping by both keepers. Both sides squandered some good opportunities as well and the half finished 0-0. 

The second half saw a much livelier start with both teams pressing to gain the advantage but neither side dominating. Vernon though took good advantage of a Sports defensive error to take the lead with a very well taken goal that left the Sports keeper stranded. Sports however did not let their heads go down and continued to battle hard and were rewarded with a free kick just outside the box. New signing and man of the match Kieran Sheppard promptly stepped up and scored the equaliser in the top right hand corner. Both teams continued to push for the winning goal but it was Vernon who capitalised on yet another Sports error to score the winning goal and take the three points.
