Hucknall Sports U8's Sunday 0 Aslockton Cranmers 0

Sunday 14th November 2004

This was a game that Sports needed to win in order to stay in the hunt at the top of the under 8's green division.

They set about their business with the usual mix of neat football and high work-rate. The first corner of the game, after only two minutes saw Thomas Shaw sneak in at the back post but his well struck shot flashed just wide. The next effort on goal for Sports, was a monster of a kick from Carter Newton in goal that bounced once before hitting the crossbar and going out for a goal kick without ever being touched by an outfield player. However it was by no means one way traffic. Aslockton came close to breaking the deadlock, when poor tackling by the Sports defence allowed the visitors to shoot just over from inside the area. It seemed to be a certainty that a goal would come before half time. Both Kieran Sheppard and Joe Barnes went close with good efforts. Ben Oscroft had a good shot well saved and Thomas Shaw came close to opening his account for the season, but this time his shot was just over the bar.

In the second half Aslockton continued to give a good account of themselves. Carter Newton needed to be alert to keep out a close range effort after a neatly worked corner. Moments later it was Aaron Bond going close for Sports with a brave header at the other end. This was turning into a really entertaining game of football. It just required that finishing touch to give Sports the lead that they were beginning to deserve. Emilio Monaci and Thomas Howarth were both working hard and winning tackle after tackle. Allowing the creative talents of Ben O and Rocket Ronnie to flourish down either flank. But no matter what they seemed to do the ball just wouldn't cross the line. Aaron Bond, Joe Barnes and Kieron Sheppard all had shots saved by the Aslockton keeper who by the end had thoroughly earned his clean sheet.

Thomas Howarth collected the man of the match award in a 0-0 draw that was as entertaining as any Spurs v Arsenal derby. After the game a friendly was played and although Hucknall Sports lost 2-1. Thomas Shaw was finally rewarded for all his effort. Collecting a £10 payout from his Manager/Dad for scoring his first goal.
