Hucknall Sports U8's Sunday 3 Calverton Colts 1

Sunday 27th February 2005

The first five minutes of the game were fast and furious, if a little scrappy, simply because the players were trying to keep warm on a bitterly cold morning.

As usual it was the midfield pairing of Ben Oscroft and Kieran Sheppard who began to dictate the play, by slowing the pace slightly and measuring their passes. It was just such a pass from Ben that picked out Kieran on the edge of the area and his first time shot into the top corner had class written all over it. 1-0 to Sports and with Joe Barnes coming more into the game with some neat link up play in and around the box, chances were starting to appear. Kieran, Ben and Aaron Bond all went close to extending the advantage. All three forcing good saves from the Calverton keeper. But then completely against the run of play, Sam Hill pounced on a loose clearance by the Sports rearguard and finished with real confidence to put Calverton back on level terms. This served as the incentive for Sports to move up another gear. Thomas Howarth and Emilio Monaci barely missed a tackle between them for the remainder of the game. The lead was restored just before the break, when Ben O jinked past his marker wide on the left and hit a vicious shot against the foot of the far post. This allowed goal machine Joe Barnes the simplest of tap-ins as the ball rolled back along the line.

With the introductions of Conner Gilbey and Will Onley, the second half belonged to the home side. Early on  the Calverton keeper was at full stretch to palm the ball around the post, as Carter Newtons long clearance ran all the way through to Joe Barnes. Although Sports were creating all the chances, just the one goal lead kept the game on a knife-edge. This changed with only three minutes left to play. Big Thomas Howarth stepped up into midfield and won the ball with a textbook tackle before sending Joe Barnes clear with a pass up the left touchline. With the keeper keeping one eye on the wave of support approaching from midfield, Joe netted his second of the game with a peach of a shot into the far corner.

Man of the match in a good team performance went to 'Captain Marvel',  Kieran Sheppard for his 100% commitment.
