Hucknall Sports U9's Saturday 1 Dunkirk 2

Saturday 18th March 2006

A brave and battling Sports side succumb to a late winner from a Dunkirk side that top Division 1 of the Y.E.L Under 9 Saturday league.

Sports who were the last remaining Division 2 side in the Saturday cup started this game as the under dogs, but it was they who started the match strongest and took the game to Dunkirk and enjoyed the better of the early exchanges. Although both sides created some good chances it was Sports who in the fifteenth minute drew first blood when Stephen Whitley laid the ball off to Daniel Long who unleashed a thunderous strike at the Dunkirk goal only for “ Big” Joe Mee to get his head on the ball and flick it beyond the reach of the Dunkirk’s keeper. Both sides continued to create chances, Dunkirk tested the Sports keeper, Dean Harris, who pulled off a superb save and from his lay off Reegan Morris was brought down just outside Dunkirk’s box. Morris coolly stepped up to take the free kick and although he beat Dunkirk’s keeper he was to be denied by the crossbar. With Sports in the ascendancy the half finished with the Hucknall side in a deserved lead.

The second half began with both teams giving it their all, Sports looking to build on their lead and Dunkirk fighting for the equaliser and again it was end to end stuff with both teams testing each others keeper and Sports rattling the woodwork on several occasions. However with only ten minutes remaining it was to be Dunkirk’s day when they scored a very well taken equaliser then minutes later forced home a corner kick to spoil the party for a valiant and hard working Sports side.

Sports man of the match went to Thomas Howarth who never put a foot wrong all day, but each and every Sports player was the man of the match in his own right.
