Pelican Colts 2 Sports U9's Sunday 7
Sunday 13th November 2005
Sports march on. The under 9’s notched up victory number eight from eight, as they proved to be too hot for the opposition to handle once again.
Sports set a blistering pace as they were one up inside a minute. Thanks to a good old fashioned blaster from the edge of the box from Kieran Sheppard A.k.a. Rocket Ronnie. And two up inside three minutes as the same player reacted quickest to guide home when Josh Pickering’s shot was saved on the line. Breathtaking is the only word to describe the quality of Sports play for the remainder of the half. Carter Newton passed his kick from hands to within an inch of the right boot of Jack Henry Williams. He immediately spread the ball wide for the marauding Emilio Monaci, who crossed to the far post for a first time shot from Kieran that drifted just the wrong side of the upright. Josh Pickering swivelled and volleyed first time to create a chance from nothing, but once again the shot beat the post as well as the keeper. The Smiling Assassin has struck in every game so far this season though, and it was no surprise when he popped up to finish off another fine passing move to give Sports a 3-0 advantage. More midfield trickery between Jack Henry and Kieran Sheppard resulted in a second goal for Josh. Taking Sports into the break with a commanding 4-0 advantage.
The second half saw the welcome return of the effervescent Conner Gilbey and it was his good work that led to a thoroughly deserved goal for Jack Henry, who showed enough presence of mind to thread the ball into the corner despite being closed down by two defenders. Jack Henry also supplied the free kick from the right hand side that forced the home sides defence into conceding an own goal for 6-0. Two individual pieces of skill then followed that had both management teams displaying their full approval. The first was a real full-blooded shot from just inside the opponents half that was still rising as it reached goal by Thomas Hot Shot Howarth. The second was the magnificent save that prevented it crossing the line. The keeper expertly palmed the ball upwards to take the pace off it and then plucked the ball out of the air before the forwards could react. A seventh goal did follow though when Man of the match Kieran Sheppard and his closest contender for the award, Jack Henry Williams broke out of defence and played a 1-2 that navigated the Pelican defence and the length of the pitch. Allowing Jack Henry to complete his double with a precise near post finish. With the result guaranteed Sports were guilty of neglecting their defensive duties in the last five minutes. And although Carter Newton did pull off a number of fine saves, even he could do nothing to prevent Pelican from scoring two late consolation goals.
