Hucknall Sports U9's Sunday 5 Sherwood FC 1
Sunday 19th February 2006
With other results going in their favour last weekend, Sports took to the pitch as the newly crowned champions of the under 9's Sunday Blue division. Their magnificent form in the league throughout the season meant that even with four games remaining they have bettered the runners-up position they achieved last term. Can they possibly put the icing on the cake and keep up their perfect 100% record?
For the second week in succession they were up against bottom placed Sherwood F.C. As with last weeks game it was the underdogs who took a shock early lead, going one nil up with a vicious in-swinging corner that crept in direct at the near post. The champions struck back immediately, Kieran Shepperd hit a stinging shot that the keeper saved more out of self preservation than anything else, allowing Aaron Bond a simple tap in for the leveller. Sports eased into the lead just before the interval when midfield general Jack-Henry Williams showed super vision and awareness to pick out Emilio Monaci wide on the right. The Italian Stallion cut inside before thumping the ball past the outstretched keeper and inside the post.
With a bitterly cold wind blowing across the pitch, all credit to the players for continuing to play neat passing football. Josh Pickering, Conner Gilbey and Jack-Henry all had good opportunities to get on the score sheet. Rocket Ronnie beat them to it though, scoring directly from the corner, despite the best efforts of the visitors keeper to prevent the ball from crossing the line. Directly from the restart Sports displayed their full range of championship winning qualities when a strong tackle in midfield won them possession, an inch perfect cross-field pass eluded the whole defence and good running off the ball allowed Conner Gilbey the time and opportunity to score a terrific goal for 4-1. With almost the last attack of the game Sports forced another corner, this time it was Josh Pickering timing his half volley to perfection to give Sports their second 5-1 victory in succession. Emilio Monaci received his well deserved man of the match trophy moments before the champagne celebrations began.
