Cotgrave Colts 0 Hucknall Sports U9's Sunday 0

Sunday 26th March 2006

Sports slipped-up at the final hurdle, in their quest for a perfect season, only managing a 0-0 draw away from home against a hardworking Cotgrave Colts side.

In a season to remember Sports have dominated all before them, with an abundance of skill, determination and teamwork. All of these qualities were in short supply though on Sunday, as the Champions struggled in vain to find a match winning goal. One would probably have been enough, as Cotgrave concentrated most of their efforts in defence, attacking only a handful of times and conjuring up only one real effort on goal, that Carter Newton palmed around the post with a fantastic full stretch dive to his right. Jack-Henry Williams leapt highest to get his head to a Kieran Sheppard corner, but could only glance it agonisingly wide. Rocket Ronnie looked to have scored with a trademark freekick, only to have the Cotgrave keeper pull off a magnificent one handed save from directly under his crossbar.

Sports were urged forward at every opportunity throughout the second half, by a vocal travelling support. Well done Mums! The best chance of the game fell to Sports leading goalscorer "Josh The Hit-man Pickering". Thomas Howarth punted the ball forward from defence, a smart drop of the shoulder was enough to leave the keeper stranded, but even then the angle of bar and post was on hand to prevent the shot from crossing the line. Cotgrave managed to hold out for a share of the points, and full credit to them for doing so, as the Under 9's have now played a massive 28 league fixtures without defeat.

Well done and congratulations to the boys and management on a fantastic achievement.
