UNDER 13 SAT 2, SHERWOOD VIPERS 1
A STENSON STUNNER INSPIRES A
SPORTS FIGHT BACK
Sports overcame visiting Sherwood on a heavy pitch following a superb all round team effort in an excellent game of football.
Faced by a large and
physical Sherwood side Sports started brightly and their flowing attacking
football caused problems for the Sherwood defence. A run and cross from Myles
Bossman beat the keeper but despite his efforts Calum Curtis could not quite
connect with the cross. Clayton George then had a chance as his angled shot went
narrowly wide then Curtis again burst through and rounded the keeper only to be
denied by the tightest of angles.
Typically, as
football goes, from their first venture forward Sherwood played a neat move down
the right and a superb cross was converted by an even better header to put the
visitors up in the game. The remainder of the first half was end to end with
Shane Davies and Jordan Burch marshalling the defence superbly and Ryan Warner
working overtime down the left wing.
Sports came off for
the half time break determined to turn the game around and as this team have
already showed they are more than capable of turning a game around when down.
Changes at half time saw Jack Dennis and Ollie Abbis coming on and within
minutes a smart through ball from Abbis released Nicky Robinson whose left
footed shot was just wide. Sherwood’s goalkeeper saved bravely at the feet of
Robinson again and a Danny Stenson shot found the side netting. With 15 minutes
left Sports desperately needed the goal their play deserved. When it did come it
was a candidate for goal of the season so far.
A strong tackle from
Jak Craig led to him feeding the ball for Bossman to go on another run. His
cross was headed clear but as the ball fell,Stenson thundered a twenty five yard
half volley into the top corner. A magic piece of skill from our captain and
with his right foot too! Sports sensed a victory but as they pressed Sherwood
broke forward and were denied by a fantastic last ditch tackle from Howard
Howells which resulted in another change as Howells limped off. Jack Moore came
on and Jason Harris was brought on to use his pace. The change nearly paid off
as Harris squeezed a shot under the keeper only to see it stop on the goal line
as the grateful keeper grabbed the ball at the second attempt.
With 5 minutes
remaining Sports fed a long ball into the box and as it fell, Warner crashed it
home to beat the keeper at the near post and put Sports in front.
Sports had turned the game around and dominated the last few minutes
holding on for tight, but comfortable win.
Man of the match
could have gone to a number of players but Shane Davies picked up the award.
Special mention should go to Thomas Scarbro who missed the game and looks likely
to be out for a while with a knee problem and all the lads wish him a speedy
recovery.
