Barlow's
Brace seals victory for Whites
This Bank
Holiday weekend saw Hucknall Sports entertaining Caribbean Cavaliers at
Newstead Recreational Ground looking to continue the run of form that saw them
unbeaten in their last 6 games. In their previous meeting Cavaliers had been
out of sorts and succumbed to a 5-1 defeat.
However, it was
clear from the first whistle that the opposition were in no mood for defeat
and they showed a fighting spirit from the off with a combative performance
from defence to attack. Hucknall struggled to create any clear cut chances and
were left with only scraps in front of goal that continued to slip wide of the
target. In an end-to-end game either team could claim to be worthy of taking
the lead, but it was Hucknall who struck first when BARLOW slotted home from
close range to settle the nerves of Whites supporters. Then, after the
Cavaliers keeper spilled a long range effort BARLOW tucked the rebound into
the back of the net for his second. Hucknall went into the break at 2-0 and
looked confident.
Cavaliers started
the second half well though and from an early corner they managed to sneak
ahead of Hucknall's Davies to slot in a goal to give them hope of a
fight-back. Hucknall continued to push for a third, but chances were wasted
with shots being rushed instead of taking their time to hit the target.
Between the sticks for Whites Brown held strong and once again Hucknall's SAS
defensive duo of Saxton and Smith limited the opposition to very few
scoring chances.
For the second
week running the opposition thought they were about to snatch a late equaliser
when the Cavaliers substitute latched onto a long ball only for his shot to be
blocked by a combination of Orton and goalie Brown. Final score 2-1 to
Hucknall.
This was a tough
game, but Hucknall's battling qualities saw them through to the final whistle
for another victory.
Man of the Match
award goes to SAXTON for 'John-Terry-like' performance at the heart of Whites
defence.
