Whites
travelled to Edwalton to play this League 2 fixture on the back of a
7-game unbeaten run looking to take their points total to over 30 for the
first time in their history.
In
the previous meeting with Cavaliers,
Hucknall had won the game 2-1 in a close run affair and even though the
opposition sat at the bottom of the league Whites knew that this would be
another test of their footballing abilities.
Playing on a small
pitch made for an end-to-end game but no clear-cut chances appeared until
midway through the first half when a quality move from Whites involving Barlow
and Hallam saw Captain for the day DIRISO smash a volley into the back of the
Edwalton net.
For
the fourth game running Whites defensive duo of Smith and Saxton played
excellently and snuffed out any attacking moves that Cavaliers put together.
Half
time arrived with the score at 1-0 to Hucknall.
With the wind at
their backs in the second half Edwalton sensed a chance to get back into
the game and drove forward with purpose. Only an acrobatic save from Whites
goalie Brown prevented the equaliser from one of their flowing attacking
moves. Hucknall looked penned in their own half and played too high up the
pitch looking for a goal on the break rather than playing from the back
instead. But thanks in the main to stout defending Whites managed to hold on
for a 5th win on the run and extended their unbeaten run to 8 games.
Once again the Man
of the Match award goes to a defender,
but this time around it was SMITH (the Silent Assassin) who just pipped his
defensive partner Saxton to the award not only for some great defensive work,
but also for trying to drive the team on by bringing the ball out of defence
rather than booting it long in the hope of a lucky break.
This was
definitely not our best footballing performance, but it is the mark of a good
team who can still win even when they are not playing well.
On Wednesday
evening Whites get a chance to effect the final outcome of the league title
when the take on Greenwood who must take at least a point to win the Second
Division Championship.
