Hucknall Sports U10's White win the Priory Celtic 6 a side tournament
Saturday
3rd July 2011

Sports were looking to have another successful tournament at Priory Celtic after winning the plate competition in the corresponding 2010 tournament. However, this time around the boys exceeded last year’s achievements having played to their full potential and winning the main tournament cup competition with some style.
Sports commenced the group phase with a tense 0-0 draw
against a strong Wilford Lions team, who eventually finished as group runners-up
on goal difference so this proved to be a solid start.
Next up were Breaston Park Red which Sports dominated and
came through with a 1-0 victory and now showing signs of hitting stride with
some great passing and movement.
The next game was a tough one against the host team Priory
Celtic White who were obviously looking to impress. It was a great end to end
battle with Sports coming back from 2-1 down to secure a 2-2 draw with a
spirited performance.
As we approached the final group game against Aspley Park
White, the first 3 places in the group were undecided so Sports needed a win
with as many goals as possible to be sure of progressing in the main
competition. The boys duly responded with a superb attacking performance to win
5-0 and top the group on goal difference from Wilford Lions.
The quarter final draw paired Sports with Debdale United
and again a solid performance was demonstrated all over the field which resulted
in a deserved 1-0 win for Sports.
The semi final draw paired Sports against a physically
strong Wollaton Hall Yellow team in which the boys proudly battled to a 1-1 draw
having been unfortunate not to win outright in normal time. With no extra time
allowed it was straight to penalties and Sports missed two of the first three
leaving a monumental task to reach the final. However, the boys and keeper
Kieran Johnson kept their nerve and we pulled it back to 1 penalty each scored
at the end of the regular three. Now it was sudden death with Sports holding out
and showing nerves of steel to win in the first round of sudden death.
The final paired us with local neighbours Rolls Royce and
was played in a great spirit with neither side managing to break the deadlock.
So 0-0 and another nerve jangling penalty shoot-out on the way! This time, we
avoided sudden death winning 2-1 on penalties and as the last save was made by
Kieran Johnson – cue the mass on-pitch celebrations as the keeper was mobbed
– champions league style by all the boys.
A fantastic achievement and much pleasure for all – well done boys – you deserved this!
