Hucknall Sports U7's Whites
come runners up in the Carlton Tournament
The Under 7's Whites played in the Carlton Town Tournament
this Sunday which was played on a league basis with six strong local teams
entering the competition.
Their first game didn't go as planned with Sports being slow out of the blocks
and got caught napping from a corner and an own goal was enough for them to
loose their first match.
A change in tactics before the next game on the small all weather pitches saw an
improvement in the Sports side but still could only manage a draw against a
strong Wollaton side.
This kick started the boys into action. In the next three games with the team
being more direct in attacking and resilient in defence and the midfield
battling for every ball saw three good wins for the boys to end this stage of
the competition in third place.
A semi final draw against the hosts Carlton was played out at a great tempo with
both sides playing some good football but Whites got the first goal with Towle
slotting home, then a lobbed shot from Blatherwick made it two. Carlton did get
a late consolation goal but Whites held on to reach the final.
The boys played a very talented unbeaten Long Eaton Utd in the Final and the
game lived up to expectations with both sides equal in all departments and goal
scoring chances were very few but Sports did carve out some openings and were
unlucky not to make a breakthrough with the Long Eaton keeper having an
outstanding game but at the end of full time it was 0-0. Extra time was then
played in this tense tight encounter, but this was still not enough to see an
opening goal. Therefore to split the teams a penalty shoot out consisting of
three players from each team was to be played out.
Great goalkeeping from Johnson still saw this phase of the Final all square;
this meant that the rest of the team entered a sudden death penalty shootout.
Unbelievably after eight spot kicks from each side, the score was still level in
this marathon final. However, on the ninth penalty the Long Eaton player slotted
home and the Sports player with all the pressure on him brought a good save from
the opposition keeper.
It was a disappointing end to a titanic battle, however the team should be proud
in the way they played and also for their commitment and never giving up! WELL
DONE BOYS.
