Win the Cotgrave Tournament
Hucknall Sports Under 7`s White won their first major tournament on Sunday 11th May 2008.Sports playing in a league format competition at Cotgrave showed they are a force to be reckoned with playing against all the best sides from the Nott's area.
They won four games and drew one to finish top of their league on a blistering hot Sunday. Sports played some great attacking football on small pitches with a direct relentless approach to their games with the front men of Blatherwick and Shooter rampaging through defences. Backed up by a strong battling tireless midfield of Towle, Hallam, Richards and Gascoigne goals were always going to be on the cards, with fourteen between them. With a defence of Tomlinson, Pincott and Gretton in no mood to give anything away at the back it made life hard for teams to break them down. If they did get through they still had to get past Johnson who stood firm in goal and only conceded two goals the whole tournament.
Sports
played a strong Clifton side in the semi-final but battled a great 2-0 win to
put them in the final against a very good Long Eaton team who in the past beat
Sports in a penalty shootout in another Tournament final.
So with both sides being very even it was always going to be a tight game, but Sports took the lead with Blatherwick slotting home from the edge of the box. But just before the break Long Eaton drew level from a goalmouth scramble.
The second half was a midfield battle with few clear cut chances and with both teams tiring in the heat the final whistle blew and went to another penalty shootout. This time only three players from each team were delegated to take the spot kicks and after three penalties honours were still even with Blatherwick, Hallam and Towle all slotting home. Then sudden death came into play and after four more penalties it was still even, then the Long Eaton player stepped up and missed the target making Sports Champions.
A great team performance entertaining and nail biting from start to finish for the travelling fans and from the coaching staff. Well done boys we hope this is the first of many.
